Michigan has 5 species of squirrels that will inhabit your home the
fox squirrel,eastern grey and black squirrels, red squirrel, northern
flying squirrels(which are nocturnal) and chipmunks. All are active
year round other than the chipmunk that hibernates from
November through March. The fox, eastern and reds may have two
litters per year averaging from 3-5 young. Flying squirrels have
been known to colonise with as many as 20 or more living in a
single dwelling. Squirrels are rodents and their chewing causes a
high percentage of house fires in the U.S. Squirrels can carry
diseases such as leptospirosis, lyme disease, hanta virus
pulmonary syndrome and rabies has been found in flying squirrels.
