Opossums are found primarily in the lower peninsula of Michigan
and adapt to cities, suburban and country settings. The opossum is
a marsupial(carry their young in a pouch much like a kangaroo) and
may have up to 13 young. Opossums are nocturnal and feed
mainly at night scavenging for berries, bird seed, grubs insects,
pet food, garbage and favor road-killed animals. Opossums take
refuge under sheds, out buildings, rubbish piles, old foundations,
decks, rock piles or any where possible to make a den. Opossums
are known to carry diseases such as leptospirosis, tuberculosis,
relapsind fever, tularemia, spotted fever, toxoplasmosis,
coccidiosis, trichomoniasis and chagas disease. They also may be
infested with fleas, ticks, mites and lice.
