Striped skunks live throughout Michigan and can be found in cities,
suburbs and country environments. Skunks make their homes in
abandoned woodchuck dens, hollow logs, culvert pipes, old
foundations, scrap piles, under decks and sheds or any place that
provides shelter. Skunks are omnivorous and feed on bird seed,
garbage, pet food, berries, small rodents, bird eggs, frogs,
salamanders and have a fondness for yard grubs in the spring and
fall destroying turf sod. Skunks can spray a foul smelling liquid up
to 15 feet away and up to eight times. Skunks are also a known
carrier of rabies in Michigan. Skunks mate in February and March
and will have a litter of 3-6 babies within two months.
